Three Factors That Affect Attention
Which technique should you use and when? You can be the best speaker in the world and still lose people’s attention. You’re up against human nature, which almost always wins, so switching things up and creating audience involvement helps keep their attention and allows them to retain more of the talk. The kinds of audience involvement are largely based on three factors.
The size of the audience. The bigger the crowd, the harder it is to interact with people. You can always ask people to raise their hands, which works in any setting. You can also have people turn and have a conversation with their neighbor or break people up into small groups to discuss something. This all becomes increasingly challenging with a larger audience, so keep that in mind as you consider which techniques to use for your audience.
The type of presentation. As a general rule, the longer you speak, the more interactions you should have with your audience. If I’m doing a forty-five-minute keynote, I may just have a few interactions here and there. But if I’m doing a three-hour workshop, I’m going to need a lot more interaction.
The size of the room. We touched on this in the last chapter, but not only does the size of the room affect the feel of your talk, it can also limit or allow audience members to move around. If the room configuration allows, sometimes I have the audience get up and spread out for an activity or to form groups. If they’re in a room that’s absolutely packed, that makes it difficult. Again, just be aware of the room when you’re deciding what kinds of activities you want the audience to participate in.
